In my spare time, I decided to re-vamp the the style of the site. This time I did the style sheet completely from scratch (as opposed to using a template). This design is much more modular, and clears up a lot of the cluttered code that the old style had.
I decided to use absolute positioning and the
tag to set up the boundaries and regions of the web page. Many sites use tables or floating elements, but I think that this offered the best solution for my needs. The code in the actual pages is very simple and easy to follow.
Basically, each section (IA, the title bar, the menu, the content, etc) is defined by a style sheet class. I used make one of each type of class on the page, and tada!, I have the different regions.
I also decided to make 2 different menus on the site. One is an absolute menu, that gets you to the main portions of the site, no matter where you are. The other is a page sensitive menu, that has different items depending on the page. Hopefully this will make navigation easier when/if the site ever gets bigger.
One issue with the new design, however, is the fixed positions of the different elements. On lower screen resolutions, the user may have to deal with a horizontal scroll bar. However, the actual content of the page should fall within the smaller screens, just leaving the trademark X outside the browsers vision.
Hopefully new content will be added to the site soon!
